Mulch is one of the best-value things you can do for a yard — it locks in soil moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and gives beds a clean, finished look. The two questions everyone has: how much do I need, and should I buy bulk or bagged?
How much mulch do you need?
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard (bulk) or cubic foot (bags). To estimate:
- Measure each bed: length × width = square feet.
- Pick a depth: 2–3 inches is ideal for most beds (3 inches suppresses weeds well; don't pile against trunks/stems).
- Calculate cubic yards:
square feet × (depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Example: a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep → 200 × (3 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = about 1.85 cubic yards.
Quick reference: 1 cubic yard covers ~160 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or ~108 sq ft at 3 inches.
Bulk vs. bagged: which is cheaper?
For anything beyond a couple of small beds, bulk wins on price. One cubic yard equals roughly 13–14 standard 2-cubic-foot bags — and usually costs noticeably less per cubic foot, with far less plastic to haul and dispose of. Bagged mulch is worth it only for small touch-ups, tight access, or when you can't take a bulk delivery.
Choosing a mulch type
- Shredded hardwood: durable, knits together on slopes, classic look.
- Bark/pine nuggets: long-lasting, good for beds (can float in heavy rain).
- Dyed mulch: holds color longer; choose reputable sources.
- Pine straw: light, great for acid-loving plants and large areas.
- Compost/leaf mulch: feeds the soil; ideal for vegetable beds.
Delivery vs. pickup
Bulk mulch is heavy — a cubic yard can run 400–800+ lbs depending on moisture. Unless you have a truck and time for multiple trips, delivery usually pays for itself. Ask the supplier about minimum delivery quantities and where they'll drop the pile.
